About us
We are a bio-food-tech company that creates food products from various natural sources of marshlands. We produce large quantities of these foods without using fresh water, transforming marshes into R&D hubs, and identifying species with multiple benefits.
Manifesto
Marisma Biomed® products must meet three requirements:
-
Health
They must provide health benefits when consumed regularly by the population.
They should particularly improve vascular health, which is a common deficiency in half of the Western population.
-
Ecology
These products, including foods, new foods, and dietary supplements, must be produced in an environmentally sustainable setting, making use of previously untapped marshland elements in a respectful manner.
We also capture tons of CO2.
-
Innovation
The products must be innovative and provide cutting-edge value.
Created using novel techniques for extracting polyphenols, proteins, and fibers
Our processes
We have developed the ability to extract healthy compounds from halophytic plants.
-
Technique
We use cultivation systems to maximise the production of these compounds.
State-of-the-art controlled dehydration and grinding techniques create powdered salicornia and soluble fibres that are easy to integrate into various food matrices. -
Producers
We work with small producers who grow salicornia and seaweed organically in the marshlands of Huelva, Portugal and the Netherlands.
We also have our own production of Salicornia and other ingredients in our experimental laboratory in Salina Santa Barbara, in the Natural Park of the Bay of Cadiz. -
Evidence
We collaborate with several universities, hospitals and research centres to ensure that we generate extensive scientific evidence before putting our products on the market.
The products we produce undergo constant analysis to guarantee their health benefits for the population. -
Santa Barbara Salt Marsh
Our living laboratory in the marshlands of the Bay of Cadiz Natural Park, in the south of Andalusia (Spain), is an old abandoned salt marsh, one of the most beautiful in the area, where we analyse the biodiversity of the intertidal marshes to create innovative and sustainable food to improve the health of the population, as well as to raise awareness of this wonderful ecosystem that has so much to discover.
Some of the research processes we are carrying out...
-
Sustainable harvesting of halophytes
It is necessary to know how halophytes such as salicornia and sarcocornia in the area respond to harvesting pruning and whether this affects their ability to flower, reproduce and their composition, in order to identify the best times of the year to harvest in order to make harvesting as sustainable as possible.
-
New crops of salicornia
We want to study the possibilities of cultivating different halophytes in clogged land as well as in canals and estuaries in order to recover and increase areas of biomass, to capture CO2 and to evaluate their possible commercial exploitation.
-
New protein sources
Find and study alternative protein sources to animal meat for human consumption. This includes exploring abundant resources found in the marshlands, such as algae, macroinvertebrates, etc.
The Team
We are a multidisciplinary team made up of biologists, chemists, nutritionists, doctors, environmentalists and graphic designers who have come together with the same objective: to bring the benefits hidden in the marshes closer to the population.
