About us
We are a bio-food-tech company that creates food products from various natural sources of marshlands. We produce large quantities of these foods without using fresh water, transforming marshes into R&D hubs, and identifying species with multiple benefits.
Manifesto
Marisma Biomed® products must meet 3 requirements:
Health
We create products designed to take care of health, with a special focus on vascular health, which affects more than 50% of the population. Prevention is key to improving quality of life, so we offer solutions that people can easily and regularly integrate into their diet.
Sustainability
We respect the balance of the marshes, adopting practices that sequester CO₂ and combat climate change. We innovate with sustainable marine farming to protect biodiversity and create a positive impact on the planet and people.
Innovation
We transform resources from marshes into functional foods through new methods of extracting polyphenols, minerals and fiber. Our products reduce sodium, provide antioxidants and improve cardiovascular health, uniting science and nature.
Processes
We have learned to extract healthy compounds from halophytic plants.
Producers
We work with small producers who grow salicornia and algae organically in marshland areas of Huelva, Portugal and Holland. We also have our own production of Salicornia and other ingredients in our experimental laboratory in Salina Santa Bárbara, in the Natural Park of the Bay of Cádiz.
Evidence
We collaborate with several universities, hospitals and research centers to ensure that extensive scientific evidence is generated before placing our products on the market. The products we produce are subject to constant analysis to always guarantee their benefits to the health of the population.
Technique
Using hydroalcoholic extraction processes, we obtain high concentrations of polyphenols from Salicornia. We use cultivation systems to maximize the production of these compounds. State-of-the-art controlled dehydration and grinding techniques create salicornia powder and soluble fibers that are easy to integrate into various food matrices.
Quality
Every stage of our process is designed to ensure effective and safe products. We use advanced processing methods that preserve nutrients and bioactive compounds to the maximum extent possible. In addition, we subject the final products to rigorous analysis to ensure their purity, stability and efficacy, always guaranteeing the best quality.
Salina Santa Barbara
Our living laboratory in the middle of the marshland of the Bay of Cadiz Natural Park, in southern Andalusia (Spain), is an old abandoned salt mine, one of the most beautiful in the area.
There we analyse the biodiversity of the intertidal marshes to create innovative and sustainable foods that improve the health of the population, as well as to raise awareness of this wonderful ecosystem that has so much to discover.
At Salina Santa Bárbara we are developing various research processes with the aim of innovating and generating natural and healthy solutions. Our studies are focused on promoting the blue economy and respect for the environment, exploring the potential of salt marsh ingredients in health and nutrition.
Responsible harvesting
We analyse how pruning for harvesting affects the flowering, reproduction and composition of halophytes such as salicornia and sarcocornia. We seek to identify the ideal times of the year for harvesting, ensuring practices that respect and preserve the balance of the ecosystem.
Innovative cultivation
We study the cultivation of halophytes in silted lands, canals and estuaries, with the aim of recovering biomass areas capable of sequestering CO₂. In addition, we explore their potential for sustainable commercial use, promoting practices that respect the ecosystem.
New proteins
We investigate alternative sources of protein for human consumption that can replace animal meat. We focus on abundant resources in salt marshes, such as algae and macroinvertebrates, evaluating their nutritional potential and viability for sustainable consumption.
The Team
We are a multidisciplinary team made up of biologists, chemists, nutritionists, doctors, environmentalists and graphic designers who have come together with the same objective: to bring the benefits hidden in the marsh closer to the population.
-
The Shadow
It leads the team. It connects the team's scientists with local marshland producers, the food industry, the health sector and society to boost the blue economy in the region.
-
Galena
It advises us on the biomedical aspects and possible healthy uses of our foods and on the design of clinical trials with our products in order to obtain the maximum scientific evidence before placing them on the market.
-
The Djinn
An expert in design and healthy eating, it looks after the image of Marisma Biomed and its relationship with our clients and society through the networks. Itis always on the lookout for innovative food trends.
-
The Chemist
In charge of R&D and safety aspects, with extensive experience in the food industry. Having worked for multinationals in the food sector, it has opted for Marisma Biomed.
-
Carbon-14
Our expert in environmental science, it manages the production of halophytes in a sustainable way, and researches the incorporation of new ingredients from the marsh into our ‘recipes’.
-
The Engineer
He is aware of the movements of the sea water through the salt flats, which gives life to our natural laboratory in the marshes of the Bay of Cadiz Natural Park.
-
The Invisible Woman
She monitors our economy and advises us on how much of our profits we can re-invest in research to make ends meet. In love with food-tech.
-
Green Spirit
Our regulatory expert, in charge of registering our foods with the European food agencies.
-
The Confidantes
They know about laws and regulations, they advise us on the best partners, producers and collaborators.
-
The Druid
He creates the healthiest ferments with what the marshlands provide us. He brings impossible foods within our reach
