Marsh and science
At Marisma Biomed, we are a bio-food-tech company that creates food products from various natural sources in the tidal marsh, such as salicornia. We produce on a large scale without consuming freshwater, transforming marshes into R&D spaces, and discovering species with unique benefits. We believe in nutrition that can prevent disease and improve people's well-being.

Health
We create products designed to take care of health, with a special focus on vascular health, which affects more than 50% of the population. Prevention is key to improving quality of life, so we offer solutions that people can easily and regularly integrate into their diet.

Sustainability
We respect the balance of the marshes, adopting practices that sequester CO₂ and combat climate change. We innovate with sustainable marine farming to protect biodiversity and create a positive impact on the planet and people.

Innovation
We transform resources from marshes into functional foods through new methods of extracting polyphenols, minerals, fiber and proteins. Our products reduce sodium, provide antioxidants and improve cardiovascular health, uniting science and nature.

Producers
We work with small producers who grow salicornia and algae organically in marshland areas of Huelva, Portugal and Holland. We also have our own production of Salicornia and other ingredients in our experimental laboratory in Salina Santa Bárbara, in the Natural Park of the Bay of Cádiz.

Evidence
We collaborate with several universities, hospitals and research centers to ensure that extensive scientific evidence is generated before placing our products on the market. The products we produce are subject to constant analysis to always guarantee their benefits to the health of the population.

Technique
Using hydroalcoholic extraction processes, we obtain high concentrations of polyphenols from Salicornia. We use cultivation systems to maximize the production of these compounds. State-of-the-art controlled dehydration and grinding techniques create salicornia powder and soluble fibers that are easy to integrate into various food matrices.

Quality
Every stage of our process is designed to ensure effective and safe products. We use advanced processing methods that preserve nutrients and bioactive compounds to the maximum extent possible. In addition, we subject the final products to rigorous analysis to ensure their purity, stability and efficacy, always guaranteeing the best quality.

Santa Barbara Saline
Our living laboratory, nestled in the heart of the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park in southern Andalusia (Spain), is an abandoned salt mine. There, we analyze the marsh's biodiversity with the goal of innovating and generating natural solutions to improve public health.
-
Responsible harvesting
We analyze how pruning affects the flowering, reproduction, and composition of halophytes such as Salicornia and Sarcocornia. We identify the optimal times of the year for harvesting, avoiding damage to the plants’ natural cycle and ensuring practices that respect and preserve the ecosystem’s balance.
-
Innovative cultivation
We study the cultivation of halophytes in silted soils, channels, and estuaries to recover biomass areas capable of sequestering CO₂. These crops also act as bioremediation systems: the plants utilize nutrients present in fish-farm effluents and help improve water quality.
-
New proteins
We investigate alternative protein sources abundant in the marsh, such as seaweeds and macroinvertebrates. We assess their nutritional profile, bioactive compound content, and potential to replace animal protein—creating new opportunities for sustainable, healthy consumption.
-
New halophytes
We study species adapted to the marsh, such as sea fennel and Suaeda vera, aiming to identify new bioactive compounds with potential for disease prevention and the development of functional foods—opening the door to future medical and nutritional applications.
The Team
We are a multidisciplinary team made up of biologists, chemists, nutritionists, doctors, environmentalists and graphic designers who have come together with the same objective: to bring the benefits hidden in the marsh closer to the population.
-
The Shadow
It leads the team. It connects the team's scientists with local marshland producers, the food industry, the health sector and society to boost the blue economy in the region.
-
Galena
It advises us on the biomedical aspects and possible healthy uses of our foods and on the design of clinical trials with our products in order to obtain the maximum scientific evidence before placing them on the market.
